Appunti sullo spinone

Notes on the spinone
We  often hear discordant theories on the color of the eyes and of the hair of our “ gruff” spinone.
Going through some reports on these subjects, written by different  judges, the impression is  that the opinions on the spinone are quite different.
Sometimes you read: excellent hair as regards weaving and color. Or: eyes of rare expression. If we analyize the first phrase,we agree that it is correct to say: excellent hair as regards weaving and hardness, but  if we add the color also, we need to specify which color it  is.
A “monk cowl” hair is undoubtfully the most beautiful that you can wish in a brown roano. We must be careful, however, to distinguish this color from the others, like the grey steel, and also the grey beige, because it is possible to see spinoni with these colors that, however, belong to other non Italian  races.
Then, without offense to anybody and before it is too late, it would be better that the judges gave the correct evaluation to this detail as well. Sometimes we read of people that offer spinoni pups of grey beige color, grey steel, and also tricolor; therefore, those new passionately fonds of the spinone that buy the pups for the first time, could be disorientated, if not misleaded by some announcements that contribute to damage the race itself.
When we choose the pup, every detail is fundamental, but if we also want  to choose the color of the hair,  then we have to check the color of the patches which will hardly betray us, while the rest of the hair is subject to variations. The newly borne pups  - we are speaking about the brown [roano]- are of a pure white, with patches of light or dark brown;  after 15-20 days some of them start to present some brown hair on the white zones, and this mix takes the name of "roano." At three-four months of age, some pups can already give the impression of the true spinone, others, instead, appear  white-brown.
On these, it is also necessary to check the color of the skin , caressing the back of the pups  against the nap, and out of the patches. If we see that their  skin is white, there will be  nothing to do, they will stay white-brown and also if the official standard admits this color, they are actually not so much appreciated. Those, instead, that will have the white hair but with a pigmented skin, in  two-three months time could become of the classical roano-brown; I can assure I  have  verified this behaviour on any of my pups and I can proove it. As regards the weaving of the hair, the hardness and the thickness of the skin is also involved, since these quality are tied up between them. In fact,  to a thick and leathery skin, will correspond a  hard hair with a good weaving, while if the quality of the skin is poor, the hair will be poor as well.
These qualities are immediately recognizable by whoever has experience of these dogs, even without touching them. To that purpose I remember that one time  Mr. Ciceri exclaimed that to the sight of a notable roano-brown spinone: -It’s a “rock”! - then turning to me and to the Judge (Mrs. Ann Maria Matteuzzi) added: - “That spinone has a  great skin and hair” and its color was that of the classical spinone, that is to say the “monk cowl” color. In that same occasion, Ciceri explained that certain qualities must be  seen  without touching, because, "whoever touches doesn't see." And I will never forget that statement.
Now let us speak  about the color of the eyes. In a  report we  read: eyes of "rare expression."
Whoever knew that spinone, could have asked the judge if he meant "rare" like good, or like bad. If he meant “bad” everything would be OK, since that spinone had a rather evil   look.
How Solaro measured the eyes.
On the method of measurement of the eyes, the big teacher of canine zoognostic, Mr. Solaro, has always stayed inflexible and in all his books this method is always perfectly reported. Here,is for example, the method for measuring the Pointer eyes.

The superior lips, seen from the front, determine a semicircle to their inferior border, and precisely on their conjunction.. Sub-frontal position of the eyes (10°). The direction of the aces of the eyelids determines an angle of 10° with the median level of the head.

Measurement with goniometer: sub-frontal position of the eyes. The direction of the aces of the eyelids determines an angle of 80° with the level of the head.
Measurement made with carpenter meter  (to be successively reported on the goniometer for reading the degrees).

(Ezio Pagliarini).

In the spinone the eyes tell everything, therefore, they have to be carefully considered. The newly borne pups have the  eyes closed and they will open them after 12-15 days. The number of the pups borne can influence this phase. However, when the eyes open, the color is deep blue  and becomes ligher and lighter until it becomes  green  like  river water as a consequence of a kind of cross fading. The more this gradation of green is marked the better it is because this color will become the definitive one, that is the brown "earth of ochre."
Therefore, when we have to make the choice, which normally happens at two months of ag,e we must carefully look at  this quality. It is true that the eyes tend to grow darker and darker but if there are not the basic elements like formulation, distance, roundness and pigmentation, we could end up with a spinone with the eyes of owl, and a spinone with eyes that are too close won't ever have the typical, intelligent and good look of the true spinone. That is why the eyes of the spinone are an extremely important detail.
I would like to add a remark on the value of the angle between the axle of the eyelids and the longitudinal median level of the head.
I
have already treated this subject, but one day a  gentleman  made me observe that the value of an angle had to be reported  inside  the same angle, Then I read some books  and I found the answer in one of  Solari’s books. Now , as you can see from the picture here below, Solaro, put the value of the angle quite behind the angle itself. And since Solaro, who  is an unsurpassed expert to me,  always takes into account the axle of the eyelids with the median level of the head, an  error must have occurred in the transcription, or in the phase of printing, that remained unnoticed.
On the method of measurement  Solaro is inflexible and in all his books this is perfectly described. To clarify that, I report what he writes in his volume "Summary of the lessons of canine zoognostic" page 111 "the position of the eyes in the dog is extremely important, in  that it is connected to the conformation of the orbits and of the skull , therefore each race presents a different position of the eyes.
This position could be frontal, sub-frontal, semi-lateral, lateral and ultra-lateral. The precise position can be deducted by measuring the angle determined from the axle of the eyelids with the longitudinal median axle of the head (the axle of the eyelids is given by the straight line that passes from the temporal angle of the eye to the nasal angle of the eye).
We will call it "frontal" when an angle slightly inferior to 90° is formed by the axle of the eyelids with the median axle of the head and it will be more frontal if the angle is nearer to a straight angle, that is when the aces  of the eyelids tend to stay on the same straight line."
This is enough to easily understand that the aces of the eyelids of the spinone determines an angle whose value is between the 75-80° with the median level of the head.  (the sketch that I have included showing the measurement with the goniometer has been taken from the volume "The pointer"by  Solaro - page 33 picture 18).
What I have just written is meant to be just a  help to whoever comes to know the spinone for the first time, certainly not to rise polemics; and if  there is someone who disagrees with what I have just said, he is free to do its own criticism, I will always accept it.
The possibility of freely expressing our opinions is always good and discussing on the spinone is even better.
