Eccomi qui, come promesso, a commentare alcuni importanti
seguenti operazioni: 54 cm (altezza garrese) sta a 42 cm (circonferenza
collo) come 100 sta a x,
(54:42-100:x=77,77%).
Cc 42 x 100
————— = Icc 77,77%
Ag 54
oppure (circonferenza collo) diviso (altezza garrese ) x
100 = 77,77%.
Circonferenza collo
————————— x 100 = Indice Cc
Altezza garrese
avanti e tangenzialmente all’apofisi occipitale, mai sotto.
corporale:
C (circonferenza o perimetro toracico) + P (profondità
del torace) = x : 2 = y.
A (altezza al garrese) – y = Z (indice toracico o
corporale).
Un esempio su Asia: C 70 + P 28 = x 98 : 2 = y 49
A 54 – y 49 = Z 5 (indice toracico o corporale).
dell’Italia meridionale e settentrionale e, tutti avrebbero voluto Asia
"Spinone" appunto, dunque, sarebbe necessario sostituire dallo standard
"Spinone".

As promised, I am here to provide you with important
information and description concerning the standard of the spinone. I am
positive that it would be valuable and easy for everybody to comprehend
facts for common management if one were to read with concentration the
existent comments on the standard.
The first verification that interests us is the circumference of the neck.
In all the official standards it is reported that its measure is equal to
one third of the height of the withers, but in reality it is much more and,
to be more precise is exactly 77.77% of the height.
This false measure can be certainly attributed to the various transcriptions
available of the standards. In fact, Mr. Solaro, in his conclusion of the
standard of the pointer, fixes the measure to two thirds or the 66.66% of
the height of the withers. I believe that even though he was aware of the
actual fact that the circumference of the neck of the spinone is bigger in
comparison than that of the pointer, he has chosen to club their
measurements. The pointer belongs to the category of gallopers that usually
have a longer neck, exactly as the head.
The spinone on the other hand belongs to the trotters group therefore has a
shorter neck, which is two thirds of the length of the head. This
characteristic will confirm the correct inclination of the shoulder that
should be visibly extending outwards. Owing to this characteristic the
spinone exudes all its power, but gracefully and elegantly through the
shoulders.
I furnish an example with some data: Some measurements
that have been recorded on a brown roan female, “Asia of the Subasio”, who
will be three years the coming April. The height of the withers is 54 cm,
circumference of the chest is 70 cm, circumference of the neck is 42 cm, and
the weight is 30 Kg.
Assuming the above measurements as a sample we apply them to the following
process: 54 cm (height of the withers) 42 cm (circumference neck),
(54:42-100: x=77.77%).
Cc 42 x 100
——————
= Icc 77.77%
Ag 54
or (circumference neck) divided by the height of the
withers, and multiply by 100 = 77,77%.
Circumference neck
—————————
x 100 = Index Cc
Height withers
You could also define it as ¾ of the height to the
withers, even if the exact value is slightly higher but, the definition will
be more practical.
It is evident that the dimension of the circumference of the neck indicated
in the standards as 1/3 of the height of the withers (18 cm for Asia), is so
disproportionate to assume that this measure has been forgotten during the
various transcriptions.
For unknown reasons the criterion written in 1939 has been drastically
edited thus deleting many details that have been the cause of many current
interpretations creating innumerable doubts.
An example is the description of the two lines of the skull - the first that
passes over the skull and the second on the nasal reed that is written in
the actual standard:
4) Head
The directions of the superior longitudinal skull aces are divergent.
Is that it?! The description is extremely pitiable and
incomplete when compared with those described in 1936 and 1939 where it
clearly indicates the correct passage of the lines and the way to interpret
them.
It would be valuable to re-establish the censored description that reads:
“prolonging the superior line of the nasal reed, it has to pass ahead and
tangentially to the occipital apophasis, and never below.
Why, I ask have the original 4 pages of the standard have been cut down to 3
for no valid reason? I believe that this unjustified elimination of valuable
details has a negative consequence in the comprehension of the standard of
this particular breed. The spinone though a new breed is currently present
in many countries of the world, and just for this simple reason, a more
detailed version of the evaluation will be more appreciated and better
understood.
Comparing the data of 1936 with the current ones it cannot go unnoticed that
the size and the weight that Dr. Brianzi and Dr. Ullio propose for the male
- that is between 56 to 66 cm, and for the female ranging from 52 to 62 cm.
The weight being 32-36 kg in the male and 30-34 kg for the female.
Analyzing the correlation between the size and the weight of the 1936 with
that of 1939, the former is by far more the correct and the best one. Even
though these numbers are just indicative information – that is 52cm. of
height corresponds to 30 Kg of weight (Brianzi-Ullio) and cm 58 corresponds
to 28 Kg (Solaro), it must be acknowledged that the spinone was sturdier and
stouter in 1936. They are all adjectives that are appropriate, and all have
the same objective to describe that the spinone has to give the impression
to have a firm grasp to the ground and not just seem to lay on it.
I wonder why Brianzi and Ullio fixed these scales of dimensions and weights
- maybe it just might be that they perceive the spinone in that aspect. I
have yet to find to a plausible rationale to the exaggerated increase of the
size thus leaving the weight even lower to that was ascertained in 1936.
We can also check the thoracic index to see what the reality is and to do
this we need three measures: height to the withers, circumference of the
chest and depth.
The height of the withers is univocal and it is obtained by measuring the
perpendicular that goes from the floor passing behind the elbow up to the
withers * (* first five dorsal vertebrae).
The circumference or perimeter of the chest is: the sums of the height of
the withers plus a quarter of this height, better if even more.
The depth – also referred as
length is measured by the
mandible?
of the sternum to the last but one fake rib. The ideal measurement should
realize at least half of the height to the withers.
With the following data we can calculate the
thoracic index:
C (circumference or thoracic perimeter) + P (depth of the chest) = x: 2 = y.
To (height of the withers) - y = Z (thoracic or bodily index).
An example on Asia: C 70 + P 28 = x 98: 2 = y 49
To 54 - y 49 = Z 5 (thoracic or bodily index).
It must be noted that the lower the index is, the wider the chest will be,
and with more capacity. While we are discussing about the "chest", we also
must add the width and the height. The width is achieved by the bending of
the ribs that in the trotter dog are more rounded off in the lower region.
This characteristic endows the spinone with a wider chest that provides it
its distinctive trotting walk - one of the best features of this breed.
The height is vertically measured after the withers and goes down to the
sternum. A good chest has to reach the elbow, better still if it overcomes
it as this will allow the spinone to hunt entire days without impeding its
performance.
I hope that everybody can seriously reflect concerning the proportions and
its effect on the future of the spinone as it should be visually pleasing
too. Recently many breeders and people fond of the spinone came to my house
from USA, England, Indonesia and Germany besides from different parts of
southern and northern Italy, and all them desired Asia (54 cm height of the
withers and 70 cm of circumference of the chest) as the ideal female to go
hunting.
There are still many details to discuss, and one that is important for me is
the shape of the forearm. According to Dr. Brianzi, Dr. Ullio and Mr.
Fiorone the forearm of the spinone has a round form, but the current
standard states that it is oval. I agree firmly with the former statement.
Another detail to note are that the dental arcades of the spinone have to
fit together perfectly, therefore their appearance has to appear like a
pincer. Even though it is the prerogative of the sheep dogs to have teeth
like a scissor that while grouping flocks of sheep often bite into their fur
thus not damaging their teeth that the pincer like teeth might cause, it’s
also acknowledged that spinone can have teeth like a scissor too.
Now I would like to deliberate about a subject discussed during the meeting
of Bertinoro on 16/03/02, which asserted that sadly the spinone is not being
predominantly reared as a hunting dog outside of Italy. Nothing can be
further than the truth! I can affirm that this unfortunately also happens in
Italy, where not all the spinone are used for hunting. I articulate
unfortunately because the spinone is a breed of hunting dogs, and should
have all the possibilities to practise it. This is the only way that way we
could increase its breeding and hunting value.
Last but not the least it is exceedingly imperative not
to confuse the spinone with the griffon, as this excellent hunting dog has
its own univocal name, "Spinone". Therefore the statement “it is a typical
griffon” should be replaced with "the spinone is a rustic dog, strong,
resistant, recognized by everybody as the only dog in the world with a human
gaze, so much so that a poet wrote: "a lot of people should yearn for the
eyes – ‘spinonizzarsi’ - like a spinone". But for the love of all let's call
it simply and fondly "Spinone!"
